Sabbatical
Most of you have heard by now that Marcus Huff and his family will be taking a three month Sabbatical in May, June, and July of 2026. But, what IS a sabbatical?
The word “sabbatical” is derived from the Biblical idea of “Sabbath.” God himself sets the pattern for Sabbath in Genesis 2:1-4a and would later command the people of Israel (Exodus 20:8-11) to set aside 1/7th of their time for rest and renewal. Historically, the giving of a sabbatical has most frequently been practiced in academia. However, as the church in America has come to see itself as serving in one of the world’s largest mission fields and has desired of its professionals a higher level of visionary leadership and specialized skills, local churches have also seen the great benefit of sabbaticals for its professional staff. Sabbatical leaves are designed to benefit the professional person (avoid burnout, refresh the spirit, engage the mind, gain perspective, knowledge, and skills) and the church organization (re-energized leadership, clarity of vision, healthy models of the Christian life).
Our District Office, which provides compensation guidelines, has given the recommendation that congregations offer their called workers a 3 month paid sabbatical every seven years. This was first utilized with Pastor Aaron in 2024 and now with our other staff as they reach this time-frame.
Our Board of Directors, Board of Elders, and church staff have all been working with Marcus to make sure that we have a smooth transition and coverage of responsibilities during the time that he is away. We have so many incredible people in leadership roles that we know everything is going to be great.
Some of you have asked what they will be doing during this time. Their plan is to practice Sabbath—rest and worship—as a family. They are looking forward to this opportunity with their two young boys. They plan on traveling, connecting with friends they haven’t seen in years, spending time with extended family while taking a couple of road trips and vacations together. They will also be sharing and encouraging others to practice a weekly Sabbath by giving out small Sabbath kits that include a candle, matches, and a brief description of how to practice a weekly Sabbath.
The Huff's are so grateful for all of your love and support you have given to them to allow this opportunity. And, they also say a big,“thank you” to so many of you who have supported them above and beyond with your financial gifts to enable them to do some things as a family that they would not be able to afford to do on their own.
To financial support the Huffs, please make a donation through our Go Fund Me, or, you can give cash or checks directly to Marcus.
